How the FIS bridges language barriers
Australia is a culturally and linguistically diverse nation; people with limited English proficiency may face language barriers when accessing important services.
The FIS supports clear communication by providing eligible groups with timely access to professional certified interpreters at no cost. Through the FIS, limited English speakers can access key non-government services with confidence, assisting settlement and participation in Australian life.
We offer a simple registration process for eligible service providers, with support available to assist applicants when needed.
Multicultural Access and Equity
The Australian Government’s Multicultural Access and Equity (MAE) policy requires Australian Government agencies and their funded service providers use certified interpreters when needed. This ensures that limited English speakers are provided equitable access to government services.
The FIS is an Australian Government funded interpreting service, delivered by TIS National. The FIS complements the MAE Policy by supporting equitable access to eligible key non-government services that fall outside of the MAE policy’s scope.
Eligibility
The FIS is available to limited English speakers in Australia who are eligible for Medicare. This includes Australian citizens, permanent residents and some temporary visa holders.
Eligible service providers from the following groups can register for the FIS:
- private medical practitioners (general practitioners, nurse practitioners, endorsed midwives & medical specialists)
- pharmacies
- non-government organisations (NGOs)
- real estate agencies
- city/shire councils
- registered trade unions
- parliamentarians
- eligible allied health professionals.
Available services
The FIS offers a range of interpreting services:
- immediate phone interpreting
